This past season, we’ve witnessed an extraordinary group of talented freshmen here in Charlotte. I’m excited to be back, shining a spotlight on some of the most remarkable young athletes from the class of 2028, showcasing the bright future that lies ahead for our city.
Coleman has impressive Division One size, and he seems to be getting taller with each game. His size is matched by an incredible skill set that truly sets him apart. Right from the start, his length and relentless motor are evident; Kharri consistently looks to make an impact with his effort and hustle. He possesses outstanding vision and is a generous passer, which makes him a standout unselfish prospect. With his speed and athleticism, he excels in transition, converting easy layups and drawing fouls effectively. There’s significant potential for growth with Coleman, and I have no doubt that by next year, he’ll be a household name.
DJ is an outstanding lead guard who excels at pressuring the ball on the defensive end while confidently handling whatever the defense throws at him. His comfort level on the court is impressive; he never forces his shots and plays within himself, which is a hallmark of a well-coached player. When he’s wide open, you can count the basket—he’s a knockdown shooter. Plus, he’s more than capable of creating his own shots, showcasing a smooth step-back in the mid-range. While I’d love to see him attack the basket more, I have no doubt that this will come as he continues to develop. He’s already an extremely solid player, and his potential for improvement is limitless.
Smith is an exceptional forward with a diverse range of offensive skills that set him apart. His relentless energy on both ends of the court ensures his presence is always impactful. Drawing double teams, he consistently demonstrates unselfishness as a passer, which greatly simplifies the game for his teammates. You can expect to see flashes of Smith’s immense potential as a future high major recruit in nearly every possession. His ability to block shots and serve as a lob threat makes him a coach’s dream at this stage of his career, and it will be fascinating to see how he continues to evolve his game.
This young guard is as Shifty as they come, Zion is a wizard with the ball, and has great court vision. His ability to run offense and handle ball pressure helped him crave out a role for PD this season as a freshman. Great shooting stroke and plays with a lot of confidence. Has to improve his strength and ability to finish over larger defenders but that’s all expected playing this level of competition. Will be one of the better guards in Charlotte for years to come.
Bobby is a standout lead guard in the 2028 class here in Charlotte. He possesses an exceptional ability to run an offense and create his own shots. His shooting skills, both from three off the dribble and catch and shoot, are top-notch. Defensively, he excels at pressuring the ball and forcing turnovers from opposing point guards. After a strong first year at Queens Grant, I fully anticipate that he will deliver some impressive breakout performances as we enter the postseason. While he still has room to improve his finishing over length at the rim, there is no doubt that Bobby is an incredibly gifted player, and his development will undoubtedly continue to elevate his game.
Some other stand out freshman are:
Cho-Cho Womack ; Guard (West Charlotte HS), Sherrod McCormick Guard (Cox Mill), Aaron Lawler (Garinger)
